Magento 2 to Shopify migration, without losing your rankings, your catalog or your customers

Magento can run almost anything, which is the catch: it takes a developer to change a template, a serious hosting bill to keep it fast, and a project every time it needs upgrading or patching. If you’re on Magento 1 you’ve been unsupported since 2020; if you’re on Magento 2 or Adobe Commerce, you’re paying in complexity and license fees for power most catalogs never use. We migrate your Magento store to Shopify with every product, attribute set and order intact, every .html URL redirected, and your content moved across. You keep your Google rankings and lose the servers, the upgrade projects and the developer on retainer.

Why Magento owners move to Shopify

Most Magento and Adobe Commerce owners we speak to aren’t unhappy with what the platform can do. They’re tired of what it takes to keep it running. Four reasons come up most often.

It takes a developer to change almost anything

On Magento, a new section, a checkout tweak or a theme change usually means a developer, a staging environment and a deploy, so the store doesn’t move as fast as the business does. Magento developers are specialized and in short supply, which makes that work slow and expensive. On Shopify most changes happen in the admin or the theme editor, and when you do need a developer, the pool is far larger and the rates far lower.

Upgrades and security patches are projects, not clicks

Every Magento version upgrade and security patch is real engineering work, and falling behind has teeth: Magento 1 reached end of life in June 2020, so stores still on it get no security fixes and can’t stay PCI compliant. Shopify is fully hosted and upgraded for you, PCI DSS Level 1 certified, with no version to chase and no patch window to schedule.

The true cost is hosting, licenses and people

Magento Open Source is free to download, but a live store needs serious hosting, a developer or agency on retainer and steady maintenance. Adobe Commerce adds a license Adobe quotes on your sales volume, which commonly runs into tens of thousands a year. Shopify is a predictable monthly plan, and even Shopify Plus, for larger merchants, costs a fraction of what an Adobe Commerce build takes to run.

Overbuilt for how most stores actually sell

Magento’s multi-store setup, EAV catalog and layered price rules are powerful, but most merchants pay for that power in speed, complexity and maintenance while using a fraction of it. Shopify covers what you actually use, a fast storefront, a solid catalog and apps for the rest, with far less to run and a checkout built to convert.

What we move off Magento, and what we protect

Magento’s data runs deep: attribute sets, store views, customer groups, price rules. So the care in this move goes into mapping that structure cleanly onto Shopify. Here’s what moves, what we rebuild, and what needs a plan.

Products, attribute sets and configurables

We export your catalog from Magento, through System → Export for most stores or the API for larger ones, and map it onto Shopify. Simple products become products, and Configurable products, with their attribute sets and attributes, become products with options and variants, keeping SKUs, prices and images. Categories map to collections, so your catalog structure carries over.

Customers, groups and order history

Customer records, addresses and full order history move onto Shopify. Magento stores passwords hashed, so they can’t be migrated, but they don’t need to be, since Shopify signs customers in with an email and a one-time code. Customer Groups map to Shopify customer tags, or to Shopify’s B2B tools on Plus where you use them for catalog or pricing.

CMS pages, blocks and the SEO in them

Your Magento CMS pages and static blocks, and the meta titles and descriptions on your products and categories, are often what ranks. We move that content and its metadata across to Shopify pages and the blog, so the pages earning your search traffic keep earning it.

Store views, bundles and B2B, handled with a plan

A few Magento constructs have no direct Shopify equal. Multiple Store Views for languages or currencies map to Shopify Markets; Bundle and Grouped products are rebuilt with a Shopify bundle app; and Adobe Commerce B2B features such as company accounts, shared catalogs and quotes map to Shopify B2B on Plus or to apps. We scope each of these with you before launch. Stored card details never move, for PCI reasons.

Your Magento URLs, mapped to Shopify

Rankings live on your URLs, so this is the step that protects them. Magento 2 adds a .html suffix to product and category URLs by default, often under a nested category path like /men/shirts.html, and Adobe Commerce works the same way. Shopify drops the suffix and uses fixed paths, /products/ and /collections/, so every URL changes. We crawl your store to list every live URL, map each one to its closest new page, and set a permanent (301) redirect, so links, bookmarks and Google all land in the right place.

Example redirects from Magento to the matching Shopify address.
Old Magento addressNew Shopify address
/blue-cotton-shirt.html/products/blue-cotton-shirt
/men/shirts.html/collections/shirts
/men/shirts/tees.html/collections/tees
/brands/acme.html/collections/acme

Will I lose Google rankings when I move from Magento to Shopify?

No, and this is the part we plan first. A 301 redirect tells Google a page has permanently moved and carries its ranking to the new address, so we map every Magento URL, the .html suffix and nested category paths included, to its closest Shopify page before launch, and your meta titles, CMS content and XML sitemap go with them. There is usually a week or two of reshuffling while Google recrawls the new addresses, then rankings settle. Most Magento stores come out a little ahead over the following month or two, because Shopify’s hosted stack tends to load faster and score better on the Core Web Vitals and mobile checks Google factors into ranking than a self-hosted Magento build carrying the same traffic. A lift isn’t guaranteed, but nothing about a clean redirect map and a quicker storefront works against you.

Will old Magento URLs redirect to the right Shopify pages?

Yes. Magento 2 gives product and category pages a .html suffix and nests categories in the path, while CMS pages use their own URL keys. We crawl your store to pull every live URL, strip the suffix, and map each one to its matching Shopify product, collection or page, with discontinued products pointing to their parent collection, so nothing lands on a dead end.

Can you migrate all the data from Magento 2, and from Magento 1?

Yes to both. From Magento 2 or Adobe Commerce, products and their attribute sets, Configurable variants, categories, customers and Customer Groups, order history, catalog and cart price rules, and your CMS pages all come across. Magento 1 is older and unsupported, so we export it through its data tools and the database rather than a current API, but the same catalog, customers and orders still move. Bundle and Grouped products are rebuilt with a Shopify bundle app. Stored card details never move, for PCI reasons.

I’m on Adobe Commerce with B2B: company accounts, shared catalogs, quotes. Does that move?

It does, but it’s rebuilt rather than imported, because Adobe Commerce and Shopify model B2B differently. Company accounts and buyer roles map to Shopify B2B companies and locations on Shopify Plus; shared catalogs and contract pricing map to B2B catalogs and price lists; and quote requests move to a Shopify quote app or draft-order flow. If B2B is core to how you sell, we map each piece with you before launch and recommend whether Plus or an app route fits your volume.

Will my customers have to reset their passwords?

No. Magento stores passwords hashed, so they can’t be migrated, but they don’t need to be: Shopify customer accounts sign in with an email address and a one-time code. Each customer’s addresses, order history and group move across with their record, so the only thing that changes for them is an easier login.

How long does a Magento to Shopify migration take?

Most of the time goes into mapping your catalog structure, building the URL map and testing, not the switch itself. The number of attribute sets, Configurable products, store views and integrations sets the timeline, so you get a dated plan with your quote, and we launch in your quietest traffic window.

Do you redesign the storefront, or keep it like-for-like?

Either, and you’ll get a straight recommendation on the review call. If organic search is your main channel, we launch close to your current look so nothing unsettles Google, then improve conversion in tested steps once rankings settle. If a dated Luma or custom Magento theme is holding you back, we rebuild the storefront to convert, on a custom build or a proven, conversion-focused Shopify theme, and tune the product page, cart and checkout from there.

What does a Magento to Shopify migration cost?

It depends on how many products and orders you’re moving, how complex the catalog and B2B setup are, and whether the storefront is redesigned. For most merchants the running cost on Shopify, even on Shopify Plus, comes in well under an Adobe Commerce license plus hosting and developers. After a free review of your Magento store, we send a fixed quote in writing, so the number doesn’t move unless your scope does.

How your migration runs

Your current store keeps taking orders until launch day. Most of the work happens before the switch.

01

Free migration review

A call with Shivam about your store, traffic, catalog and integrations. You get a straight answer on whether moving makes sense, then a fixed quote in writing.

02

Audit and URL map

We crawl your site, pull your top pages from analytics and Search Console, and map every URL, product field and integration before anything moves.

03

Build behind a password

Your Shopify store, theme and integrations are built and your data imported on a password-protected store while the old one keeps selling.

04

Keep what works, improve the rest

We don’t rebuild for the sake of it. Pages and layouts that already earn sales and rankings stay close to what you have, and the rest is rebuilt to Shopify’s conversion (CRO) best practices: a faster product page, a clearer cart and a shorter checkout. Where it earns its place, we add a proven Shopify app for reviews, bundles or on-site search, such as Judge.me, Rebuy or Searchanise, rather than build every feature from scratch.

05

Test and launch

Test orders, refunds and emails, plus redirect checks on your most-visited pages. We launch in your quietest traffic window, then sync any orders placed during the switch.

06

Monitor and grow

After launch we watch Search Console, crawl errors and conversion rate and fix what comes up. Then, if you want, we move on to CRO and marketing.
