A short wobble in rankings after a platform move is normal while Google recrawls the site. A lasting drop is not. It almost always traces back to a few avoidable causes, and each one has a fix you can plan before launch.
Why rankings drop after a migration
- Missing or wrong redirects. Old URLs that return 404, or that redirect to an unrelated page, lose the signals they had earned.
- Changed content. Titles, headings and copy that were rewritten or dropped during the rebuild.
- Blocked crawling. A robots.txt rule, a password page or a CDN setting that stops search engines reaching the new store.
- Broken internal links. Navigation and in-content links that still point at old URLs, forcing every click through a redirect.
Understand how Shopify structures URLs
Shopify uses fixed paths: products live under /products/, collections under /collections/, pages under /pages/ and blog posts under /blogs/. You cannot keep a WooCommerce-style /product/ path or a Magento-style .html suffix, so most URLs will change. That is fine, as long as every old URL is redirected to its closest new page with a permanent (301) redirect. Google has said that 301 redirects do not lose PageRank.
Build the redirect map from real data
- Collect every URL from your sitemap, a full crawl, analytics landing pages and Google Search Console.
- Map one to one. Each old product goes to the same product, each category to its matching collection, each article to the same article.
- Handle discontinued products by pointing them to their parent collection, not the homepage.
- Avoid chains. If an old URL already redirects somewhere, point it straight at the final Shopify URL.
- Keep it in a spreadsheet you can re-test after launch.
Carry the content across
Move titles, meta descriptions, headings and body copy as they are, at least for launch. Keep image alt text. Make sure product structured data matches what is on the page. If you want to rewrite copy, do it after rankings have settled, so you can tell which change moved what.
Launch checks that protect rankings
- Confirm the store is not password-protected and robots.txt does not block important paths.
- Submit the new sitemap (Shopify generates one at /sitemap.xml) in Search Console.
- Spot-check redirects for your highest-traffic and most-linked pages.
- Update internal links in menus, footers and content to the new URLs.
If you keep the same domain, you do not need Google’s Change of Address tool; it is meant for moves to a new domain.
Monitor for the first months
Google says it can take a few weeks for most pages of a small or medium-sized site to be reprocessed after a move. During that time, check the Pages report in Search Console weekly, fix new 404s with redirects, and compare clicks for your top pages against the weeks before launch.
The safest migrations change one thing at a time. If organic search brings in most of your sales, launch close to like-for-like and roll out design changes once rankings settle.
