“How much will it cost?” is the first question almost every store owner asks, and the honest answer is that it depends on your store. That is not a dodge. Two stores with the same revenue can need very different amounts of work. Here is what actually moves the number, so you can estimate your own scope and compare quotes on equal terms.
What drives the price of the migration
- Catalog size and complexity. The number of products and variants matters, but so does how they are structured: options, custom fields, bundles and kits all take more mapping than simple products.
- How much history you move. Years of orders and customer records take longer to import and to check than a recent catalog.
- Integrations. Each connected system, such as an ERP, accounting, inventory, shipping or a subscription platform, needs to be reconnected and tested with real orders.
- The storefront. Setting up a proven theme is a different job from designing and building a custom one.
- Content and SEO volume. A store with hundreds of articles and landing pages has more URLs to map and more content to carry across.
- Special features. B2B pricing, multiple currencies or languages, and subscriptions each add planning.
What should be included in a quote
A low number can hide missing work. Before comparing prices, check that each proposal covers:
- A full URL inventory and a one-to-one redirect map.
- Data import with record counts checked against your old store.
- Integration testing with real orders.
- Launch-day checks and a final sync of orders placed during the switch.
- Support after launch, and for how long.
Fixed price or hourly?
Hourly billing can look cheaper on paper and grow as surprises appear. A fixed quote moves the risk of underestimating onto the agency, which is why it should come after a proper review of your store. We send a fixed quote in writing after a free review, and the number changes only if you change the scope.
Ongoing costs to budget for
The migration is a one-off. After launch, plan for:
- Your Shopify plan subscription.
- Apps for features your old platform handled, such as reviews, subscriptions or advanced search.
- Payment processing fees, which depend on your plan and payment provider.
- Any ongoing design, conversion or marketing work.
Many owners find their total running cost falls when hosting, security patching and extension maintenance disappear, but compare your own numbers rather than relying on a rule of thumb.
The cheapest migration is the one you only do once. A missed redirect map or an untested integration usually costs more to fix after launch than it would have cost to do properly.
